Juvederm® is a group of dermal filler products that are used to smooth moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds around the mouth, nose and forehead. Juvederm® can also be used to reduce the appearance of scars and is a favorite filler for lip augmentation. This product is manufactured by Allergan.
How does Juvederm® work?
As we age, the hyaluronic acid in our body decreases, causing skin volume to decrease and wrinkles to occur. Juvederm® is a gel that contains hyaluronic acid, which is a natural polysaccharide (sugar molecule) that occurs in the body. As we age, the hyaluron in our body – which provides strength and hydration – decreases, which means that skin volume decreases and wrinkles occur.
When Juvederm® is injected into the skin, the hyaluronic acid attracts and binds to water molecules. Since each molecule can hold 1,000 times its weight in water, using Juvederm® can create plump, youthful looking skin and lips. Juvederm® is gradually degraded by the body’s own mechanism and disappears without any residue.
What are the advantages of Juvederm®?
While some fillers may have a granular consistency, Juvederm products are manufactured using a unique Hylacross technology that cross-links molecules and creates a smooth, malleable gel. As a result, wrinkles and folds injected with Juvederm® will have a very smooth and natural appearance. Juvederm® also comes in a variety of formulations, which allows Dr. Tansavatdi to have many options in reaching your aesthetic goals.
How is Juvederm® administered?
Juvederm® is administered using a fine needle. Juvederm® contains lidocaine to numb the area and make the injections more comfortable. It is important to use a health care provider with the training and experience to inject fillers in a way that flatters your face and does not look overdone.
Who is a good candidate for Juvederm®?
Patients must be in good health, have reasonable expectations for the procedure and be over 21 years of age. Juvederm® cannot be used if you have a bleeding disorder, are pregnant or are breastfeeding. If you have a skin infection (such as a cold sore, pimple or rash), you must wait until it is healed. Let Dr. Tansavatdi know if you are allergic to gram-positive bacterial proteins or to lidocaine. During the week before your procedure, you must avoid taking medications and supplements that prolong bleeding.
How long does Juvederm® last?
Due to the cross-linking technology used in Juvederm®, the product generally lasts between six and twelve months. The longevity of results depends on the formula and can vary from one person to another.
Can Juvederm® be combined with other fillers and procedures?
Absolutely! During your consultation, Dr. Tansavatdi will discuss your aesthetic goals and how to achieve the look you desire. Many of our Westlake Village facial plastic surgery patients choose to combine Juvederm® with other procedures to create a more youthful, rested appearance.
