Otoplasty surgery corrects misshaped and/or protruding ears and can be performed on children and adults. Protruding ears can have a damaging effect on a person’s self-esteem and many individuals who have misshaped ears can feel self-conscious and embarrassed.

Dr. Tansavatdi helps these patients by surgically correcting the shape and size of the ears to restore a normal balance with the face. Ear reshaping surgery, also known as otoplasty, is an extremely rewarding procedure that has helped many patients enhance their appearance and improve their quality of life.

What Can Otoplasty Surgery Accomplish?

Otoplasty surgery can correct prominent ears that stick out, restore normal appearance to misshaped ears, and reduce the size of abnormally large ears. In many cases, the ears are pinned back closer to the head, or the cartilage is reshaped to correct cupped / shelled ears.

Who Is A Good Candidate For Otoplasty?

Otoplasty surgery can be performed on any patient over the age of 5. Patients should be in good general health and have realistic expectations of what this surgery can accomplish. Dr. Tansavatdi places patient safety first and will carefully screen each patient to determine their candidacy. She will recommend the best course of treatment in order to reduce the risk of complications while delivering optimal aesthetic results.

How Is Otoplasty Surgery Performed?

Ear surgery is performed at an accredited outpatient surgical facility and may last up to two hours, depending on the extent of the correction. When performed on young children, ear surgery may be carried out in a hospital setting. In most cases, ear surgery requires moderate sedation or general anesthesia; however, in patients who need a small correction, the treatment can be performed under local anesthesia.

Dr. Tansavatdi is experienced in using a range of ear reshaping techniques. During ear pinning surgery, she makes an incision along the back of the ear to expose the cartilage. Next, she repositions the cartilage close to the head, removes excess cartilage, and sutures it in place. In a similar technique, Dr. Tansavatdi may remove the skin to fold the cartilage back, which is held in place with sutures, with additional stitches used to close the incision. To perform reconstructive ear surgery, Dr. Tansavatdi may use one of several advanced techniques, depending on the degree of invasiveness and correction needed.

Recovering From Otoplasty Surgery

After otoplasty surgery, the ears will be bandaged to minimize swelling and facilitate healing. The length of recovery time depends on each patient and the complexity of the procedure. Most patients are able to return to work, school, and other daily activities within a week. Ear surgery results usually become apparent within three weeks, after which time full recovery is achieved. Dr. Tansavatdi closely monitors patients throughout their recovery and provides detailed daily postoperative instructions.
