Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)

Lumecca Demonstration On Patient’s Face With Dr. Tansavatdi

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)

It’s hard to feel youthful when you look in the mirror and notice that your skin has age spots, large pores, rosacea or uneven pigmentation. Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a comfortable, non-invasive treatment that can improve the appearance of your skin. Since many of these imperfections are caused by sun damage, IPL is primarily used to rejuvenate skin that has been exposed to the sun, including your face, neck and hands to give you clear, flawless looking skin.

How does IPL work?

After carefully choosing the area to be treated, Dr. Tansavatdi will use a hand-held device to emit an intense pulses of visible broad spectrum light. The light energy is absorbed and attracted to cells that store red and brown pigment in your skin. The energy heats your skin using a process called photothermolysis. This stimulates the production of collagen, causes dark spots to get darker and come to the surface of your skin, and remove red spots and small vessels from the skin. Once these spots reach the surface of your skin, they will flake off or be re-absorbed into your body. Your skin will be clear and beautiful!

IPL has been used in cosmetic surgery for more than 20 years. Lumecca IPL is a third generation IPL device. Because of its enhanced ability to filter wave lengths, it is more comfortable and much more effective than previous generations of IPL devices.

What are the advantages of IPL?

IPL is a non-surgical procedure that can rejuvenate your skin. Research has proven that when IPL is regularly performed as a maintenance treatment the benefits may include protection from skin cancer and even arrestment of the aging process. In addition, you can achieve clearer skin by decreasing rosacea, eliminating red spots and vessels, and removing freckles, age spotsand discoloration. An added benefit is that increased collagen created by IPL will make your pores appear smaller.

How is IPL performed?

IPL is performed using a handpiece that resembles a light-emitting handgun. In each area being treated, you will see a flash of light and feel a sensation like a rubber band snapping. We recommend taking an over-the-counter pain reliever prior to the treatment. Local topical anesthetic may be administered to keep you comfortable but is rarely necessary.

For 48 hours after your treatment, your skin may feel like it is sunburned. The full results of your treatment should be visible within two to three weeks depending on the location of treatment (i.e. face vs. chest or arms). Generally patients require one to three treatments to achieve clear, youthful skin. After achieving clear, youthful skin, Dr. Tansavatdi recommends maintenance treatments two to four times per year to keep skin looking young and healthy.

Who is a good candidate for IPL?

IPL is beneficial to anyone whose skin has been damaged by the sun or tanning beds, or who have developed rosacea or increased visible red vessels on the skin . Some common visible signs that can be treated include freckles, age spots, sun spots, liver spots, discoloration, red patches in the cheeks or chin from rosacea, vascular marks, and tiny red vessels around the nose. Candidates must be in good health, willing to wear sun block and avoid sun exposure following treatment.

How long does IPL last?

The results from IPL treatment will be permanent, as long as your skin does not sustain further damage from the sun or tanning beds. Dr. Tansavatdi recommends that patients avoid tanning beds and wear sunscreen when they are outdoors. In addition, Dr. Tansavatdi recommends maintenance treatment two to four times per year to combat DNA damages that occur with aging and to maintain a youthful clear complexion.

Can IPL be combined with other procedures?

Absolutely! During your consultation, Dr. Tansavatdi will discuss your aesthetic goals and how to best achieve the look you desire. Many of our Westlake Village facial plastic surgery patients choose to combine IPL with other procedures to create a more youthful appearance.
