Restylane® is a group of facial fillers manufactured by Galderma. Restylane has been safely used since 1996, accounting for more than 10 million injections in 65 countries. Restylane® is FDA approved for the treatment of facial wrinkles and folds. Restylane® products come in different particle sizes, so that treatments can be precisely tailored to meet your aesthetic goals. Restylane® products include Restylane® Silk (to add volume to lips) and Restylane® Lyft (to add volume to deep wrinkles).

How does Restylane® work?

Restylane® is a gel that contains hyaluronic acid, which is a natural polysaccharide (sugar molecule) that occurs in the body. As we age, the hyaluron in our body – which provides strength and hydration – decreases, which causes skin volume to decrease and wrinkles to occur.

When Restylane® gel is injected into the skin, the hyaluronic acid attracts and binds to water molecules. Since each molecule can hold 1,000 times its weight in water, using Restylane® can create plump, youthful looking skin and lips. Restylane® is gradually degraded by the body’s own mechanism and disappears without any residue.

What are the advantages of Restylane®?

Restylane® products come in different particle sizes, so that Dr. Tansavatdi can select the best filler to meet your aesthetic goals. The particles range from very small (Restylane Silk® is used for fine wrinkles and detailed shaping) to larger (Restylane Lyft® is used for restoring volume to cheeks and smoothing severe wrinkles).

These gels are not derived from animal sources, so Restylane® does not cause allergic reactions in patients who are sensitive to beef, chicken or eggs.

How is Restylane® administered?

Restylane® administered using a fine needle or cannula. For your comfort, the area will be numbed using a topical numbing cream. Most Restylane® products also contain a local anesthetic to make the experience more comfortable. Injections can take up to 30 minutes. It is important to use a health care provider with the training and experience to inject fillers in a way that flatters your face and does not look overdone.

Who is a good candidate for Restylane®?

Patients must be over the age of 21, in good health and have reasonable expectations for the procedure. Restylane ® cannot be used if you have a bleeding disorder, are pregnant or are breastfeeding. If you have a skin infection (such as a cold sore, pimple or rash), you must wait until it is healed. Let Dr. Tansavatdi know if you are allergic to lidocaine. During the week before your procedure, you must avoid taking medications and supplements that prolong bleeding.

How long does Restylane® last?

Depending on the type of Restylane® product used and the location of the injection(s), the results can last up to two years. Dr. Tansavatdi will advise you on what you can expect. In some cases, patients require a touch-up after one month to reach the desired effect.

Can Restylane® be combined with other fillers and procedures?

Absolutely! During your consultation, Dr. Tansavatdi will discuss your aesthetic goals and how to achieve the look you desire. Many of our Westlake Village facial plastic surgery patients choose to combine Restylane® with other procedures to create a more youthful, rested appearance.
