Rhinoplasty-Revision Specialist – Dr. Kristina Tansavatdi
The transformation of your face after Rhinoplasty can be a powerful and positive experience. On the other hand, the unhappy results of a poor rhinoplasty surgery can be seen in your mirror every day. Rhinoplasty is one of the most challenging cosmetic procedures – a millimeter of difference between the two sides of your nose can be seen by the naked eye. Also, negative changes to the nose continue to evolve over time, with minor imperfections becoming very noticeable. The goal of revision rhinoplasty is to make the necessary improvements to create the most cosmetically and aesthetically appealing nose. What Can Dr. Tansavatdi Accomplish Through Revision Rhinoplasty?
Dr. Tansavatdi will meet with you to discuss what bothers you about the appearance of your nose and to determine what surgical options are available so that the results closely mirror your expectations. She will examine for any functional problems with breathing, as previous surgery or trauma can disrupt the architecture necessary for keeping the nasal passages open. Limitations with any repeat surgery will be reviewed with you as well.
Who is A Good Candidate For Revision Rhinoplasty?
Revision rhinoplasty provides the best results for people who have a clear picture of the desired appearance of their nose. It is helpful to bring previous pictures of yourself and pictures of other noses in the media that appeal to you. Limitations of surgery will be explained in consultation so that you have a reasonable expectation of the results of surgery. It is important to be honest about your medical history in order to minimize the risk of any complications during and after surgery. This includes history of sleep apnea or seasonal allergies, prior nose surgeries and other cosmetic procedures, and adverse drug reactions.
How Is Revision Rhinoplasty Performed?
Dr. Tansavatdi will detail a plan for surgery and will review it with you to make sure that you and she share a clear picture of the surgical outcome. Each plan is different for each patient based on the steps required to achieve your goal.
The surgery will most likely require a small incision on the underside of the tip of your nose. However, in some cases, to avoid additional scar formation and to provide specific work on the bridge of the nose, all of the work may be done on the inside of the nose. If there are problems with breathing or with support from previous surgery, cartilage may be harvested either from within the nose or from your ear to build up the support framework. In rare cases, cartilage or bone may need to be harvested from distant sites. After closing the incisions, Dr. Tansavatdi applies surgical dressings to the nose and face to protect the wounds and minimize swelling.
Revision rhinoplasty is performed under moderate sedation or general anesthesia at an accredited outpatient facility or a hospital. Patients return home the same day and are carefully monitored by Dr. Tansavatdi and her team.
Recovering From Revision Rhinoplasty
Recovery from revision rhinoplasty depends on the techniques that were used to provide the change to the nose. Expect up to two weeks for most of the swelling, bruising and discomfort to resolve. This can be hastened by keeping the head elevated, applying cold compresses around the eyes and nose, and by closely following postoperative instructions. An external splint, tape, and any sutures placed at the time of surgery are removed after one week. Aesthetic results become evident over time and the final outcome is achieved within 8 to 12 months after surgery.
