How is Rhinoplasty Performed?

The surgical techniques used to perform a rhinoplasty nose job vary from patient to patient, and greatly depend on the nature of the issue. For patients who need complex alterations, Thousand Oaks area surgeon Dr. Tansavatdi performs an open rhinoplasty with small incisions on the outside of the nose. Open rhinoplasty is more invasive, but it allows Dr. Tansavatdi to lift the nasal skin and expose the underlying nasal structures for accurate reshaping. Closed rhinoplasty, on the other hand, involves smaller incisions made within the nostrils. Dr. Tansavatdi will determine which technique is best for you during a surgical consultation. Primary rhinoplasty surgery may be performed under mild sedation with local anesthesia or general anesthesia at an accredited outpatient facility. Patients are free to go home within a few hours following surgery.

Who is a Candidate for Rhinoplasty?

If you’re interested in rhinoplasty nose surgery in the Thousand Oaks area, Dr. Tansavatdi can help. She will first examine the anatomy of your nose and its relationship with the rest of your face. She will then discuss your nasal concerns and carefully screen your medical history to determine whether you are a good candidate for a rhinoplasty nose job. In order to minimize any potential risks, it is extremely important to disclose all relevant medical information. If you’d like to talk with Dr. Tansavatdi personally and find out if you’re a good candidate, please call (805) 715-4996 or contact us online. The best candidates for rhinoplasty surgery are those with nasal skin that is not too thick or thin, a visible underlying strong cartilage framework, good general health without history of healing problems, and realistic expectations with defined goals.

Having Realistic Expectations

There are limitations with a rhinoplasty nose job, and requesting a particular “style” may not be attainable by surgery. An honest surgeon will point out these limitations with you. Rhinoplasty is not an exact science, and is sometimes as much an art as it is skill. Asking for perfection is never realistic, but asking for a good cosmetic outcome should be attainable by a skilled and experienced doctor.

What is the Cost of Rhinoplasty Surgery?

Rhinoplasty surgery is the most delicate and demanding of cosmetic surgeries. Due to the important role the nose plays in both breathing and the aesthetic balance of the center of the face, rhinoplasty requires many years of experience to master this balance of form and function. No other elective surgery requires as much experience. Thus, the cost of rhinoplasty surgery commensurately increases with the experience of the surgeon. Additionally, as patients’ nasal structure and cosmetic goals vary greatly, the cost of rhinoplasty likewise varies. Dr. Kristina Tansavatdi specializes in rhinoplasty surgery with over 10 years of experience, and this is the surgery she performs the most in her practice.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgery, the national average for the cost of rhinoplasty surgery in 2020 was $5,483. However, keep in mind that this average did not include the price of anesthesia, operating room facilities, or other related expenses. This average also comes from polling surgeons from around the country. In metropolitan areas and highly populated areas, you can expect the cost to be above this average. Other factors that may determine the cost of your rhinoplasty surgery include the experience and expertise of the surgeon, the approach used, and the complexity of the case particularly if a revision is involved. When you meet with Dr. Tansavatdi, a detailed surgical plan will be formed after the discussion of your goals and an in-person examination. Dr. Tansavatdi’s recommended surgical plan will subsequently determine the estimated cost of rhinoplasty surgery for you. There is no one standard price as every rhinoplasty surgery is unique. The total cost may vary based on the complexity of your case and the surgical time involved.

The total costs are inclusive of the following listed services:

  • Anesthesia fee
  • Dr. Tansavatdi’s surgical fee
  • Surgical outpatient facility costs
  • Pre-surgical visit
  • Vitamins and/or supplements for optimal post-surgical healing
  • Post-surgery supplies or external casts
  • Post-surgical visits up to 1 year or more

Comparing functional and cosmetic rhinoplasty

Many individuals decide to get nose surgery, but their reasons for doing so can be very different. While plenty undergo rhinoplasty to improve their appearance, others have the surgery done to correct breathing problems which can interfere with their sleep and daily life. Sometimes, correcting one of these issues may also improve the other. Dr. Tansavatdi will discuss with you how cosmetic rhinoplasty may make your breathing better, or how functional rhinoplasty may improve the appearance of your nose. Whether you're considering cosmetic or function rhinoplasty, either surgery will be life-changing for you.

Cosmetic rhinoplasty

Cosmetic rhinoplasty, commonly known as a “nose job”, is surgery for those who want to re-shape the exterior of their nose to achieve a more pleasing aesthetic appearance. Sometimes. even when a rhinoplasty is performed for cosmetic reasons, breathing improvement comes along with it. While cosmetic rhinoplasty should never be substituted for functional rhinoplasty, patients are often pleased to discover that their breathing improves after the cosmetic surgery.

Functional rhinoplasty

Some individuals are simply born with narrow nasal valves. Some experience an injury that effects breathing, and others have nasal valves that begin to fail with age. With a functional rhinoplasty, Dr. Tansavatdi can repair the cartilage of the nostrils and improve the structural problems that are blocking the airway.

Closed and Open Rhinoplasty Techniques

Every effort is made to conceal scars in both a “closed” and an “open” rhinoplasty technique. The right approach for your specific needs will be determined during your consultation.

Open Rhinoplasty

An open rhinoplasty technique allows precise manipulation of the cartilages of the nasal tip, but requires a tiny incision at the base of the nose that is usually quite imperceptible. The nasal tip cartilages are visible to your surgeon because the nasal skin is raised off the framework for proper manipulation. The bridge of the nose can also be exposed, lowered and smoothed in an open rhinoplasty technique. At the same time, the nasal valves can be opened and functional concerns addressed at the same time.

Closed Rhinoplasty

A closed rhinoplasty technique is done through incisions inside the nose. This is a good approach for work on the nasal bridge with minimal or no work on the nasal tip. This approach allows for faster healing and less swelling in the nasal tip. This procedure can also be combined with functional work to help improve breathing.

Rhinoplasty Recovery

Recovery from rhinoplasty nose surgery can take up to two weeks. If you’re planning to attend any social event, it’s wise to allow yourself four weeks of healing time. Swelling, bruising, and discomfort are common during this time; however, these can be easily managed by keeping your head elevated, applying cold compresses around your nose and eyes, and by closely following post-op instructions. An external splint, tape, and any sutures placed at the time of surgery are removed in one week.

Most people can return to work in two weeks. Acquaintances will barely notice signs of surgery at two weeks, while close friends and family will notice changes. Mild swelling in the nose slowly decreases over several months. A note on swelling: Often, invariably a patient will get distressed and concerned about the amount of distortion that appears from the swelling. The nose may look like a large ball without distinct structures for sometimes a few months, and the final results may not be reliable for up to one year.

This swelling will be even more pronounced in patients with thick skin. The nose may even look asymmetric, and it is common to question whether your surgeon performed at his or her best. Be patient. If you chose your surgeon carefully, he or she will guide you through the process, and the results will speak for themselves in time. We encourage you to bring up any questions or concerns you have about nose surgery recovery during your consultation with our Thousand Oaks area surgeon, Dr. Tansavatdi.

Is rhinoplasty safe?

A rhinoplasty nose job is like any other surgery: it’s a complex and delicate procedure. However, it is safe when performed by a board certified, highly experienced surgeon with particular skill in operating on the nose. The nose is important for breathing, which is often overlooked by inexperienced surgeons whose only goal is to achieve a beautiful nose. These doctors can sometimes disregard the late effects on the function of the nose. This means that if a rhinoplasty procedure is performed poorly, a patient could have more problems with breathing from the nose several years down the line. This fine balance between function and form (cosmesis) is what makes a talented nose surgeon stand out, and is what individuals should look for when researching their options for the right surgeon. Safely performing the procedure while minimizing risks and providing the aesthetic results you want should be the goal of your rhinoplasty surgeon.

How painful is rhinoplasty?

Nose surgery requires incisions and meticulous dissection. The amount of pain involved will depend on the amount of dissection and work. Ultimately, the pain varies from patient to patient. Some have a high pain tolerance and are able to return to work in three days, while others take weeks to recover. Any work on the septum or inside of the nose will contribute to additional pain and congestion. In addition, any work on the bones will contribute to pain, external bruising, and swelling. It’s difficult to determine the degree of pain prior to surgery, however, a good rule of thumb is that most people require narcotics for pain control for the first week after surgery and the most intense pain occurs within this time frame.

A Focus on the Face

Most plastic surgeons operate across the entire body. Dr. Tansavatdi has dedicated her entire career to focusing on surgeries on the face and neck. After almost a decade in practice and thousands of successful procedures, she has become the face, neck, eyelid, and nose surgery specialist she is today.

Coveted Credentials

Dr. Tansavatdi is a double board-certified and fellowship-trained facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon.

An Artist’s Eye

Dr. Tansavatdi received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, Berkeley, completed her medical school at Wake Forest University, finished residency in head and neck surgery, and then dedicated her focus to facial plastic surgery for her fellowship training. Today, the face and neck are her surgical canvas and patients count on her to produce her finest work every time. Her aesthetic philosophy is that an attractive and well-proportioned face and neck only comes from achieving a natural un-operated look. Through a keen eye for detail and incorporating and customizing an approach based on each person’s anatomy, she is able to obtain these goals, uniquely separating her from other surgeons who may practice a cookie-cutter approach and explains why she is able to have such successful results.

Natural-Looking Results

Dr. Tansavatdi’s artistic background and her ultra-fine focus on facial aesthetics come from a superior understanding of facial anatomy and physiology and what can be done to produce subtle natural-looking results. Every patient is unique and every surgery is uniquely tailored to fit them.

Should I bring photos of noses I like?

Yes, if you wish. Providing pictures will help guide your surgeon. Additionally, having your surgeon morph the pictures to show you what they expect the results to look like will provide an additional level of reassurance that your expectations are realistic and in line with your surgeon’s intentions.

What about rhinoplasty revisions?

An experienced surgeon should be able to balance form and function appropriately to give you a good result while preventing breathing complications that can occur 10 to 20 years down the road. Therefore, knowing a surgeon’s long-term revision rates is important as well. This is usually hard to obtain unless the surgeon is critical of his or her own results. Find a surgeon that is meticulous and who analyzes his or her own work.

What kind of research should I do?

In addition to doing research on Thousand Oaks and Westlake Village surgeons who are available to you, it’s very important that you have some knowledge of what nose surgery entails, the amount of downtime to expect, and what the post-operative healing period will be like.

Do other surgeries work well with rhinoplasty?

Yes. Some patients choose to combine rhinoplasty with other surgeries to attain the aesthetic goal they have. Certain procedures that are looked into when getting rhinoplasty are facelift surgery and brow (forehead) lift surgery to enhance balance. If you’re interested in combining procedures, we’re happy to answer any questions you have.
