Laser Skin Resurfacing in Westlake Village by Dr. Kristina Tansavatdi

Our Westlake Village laser skin resurfacing is the most important procedure for dramatically correcting signs of aging and rejuvenating the face. Laser skin resurfacing can address signs of aging on the skin that have been caused by sun damage, including brown spots, wrinkles, and uneven pigmentation. Laser skin resurfacing can also treat acne scars and pre-cancerous lesions. Dr. Tansavatdi performs two types of non-surgical skin resurfacing procedures at her Westlake Village practice to improve skin issues: chemical peels and ablative lasers.

What can skin resurfacing accomplish?

Dr. Tansavatdi offers both fractional CO2 laser skin resurfacing and medium/deep chemical peels for resurfacing the skin and removing problem spots, lightening pigmented skin, and diminishing wrinkles. Both techniques can tighten the skin, reduce wrinkles, and even out the skin’s texture and color. They can also be used to even out acne scars, making them less visible. Laser skin resurfacing and chemical peels also have the ability to remove pre-cancerous lesions. The deeper and more extensive the peel or laser skin resurfacing treatment, the longer the healing time and length of lingering redness—but also greater the improvement in wrinkles, color, and skin texture.

How is skin resurfacing performed?

Both laser skin resurfacing and medium/deep chemical peels can cause considerable discomfort during the procedure. The procedures are performed under mild sedation by Dr. Tansavatdi at an accredited outpatient surgical facility or hospital. In most cases, Dr. Tansavatdi will inject a local anesthetic underneath the skin and/or perform a nerve block to numb the treated area or the entire face. Topical anesthesia may be applied to the face as well. The skin will then be cleansed, and any skin oils will be removed prior to treatment.

For laser skin resurfacing, the eyes are covered for protection from the CO2 laser. Several passes at different settings may be made to reach the desired effect for each region of the face. For chemical peels, separate regions of the face will be treated with different concentrations given the differences in skin thickness throughout the face. A barrier cream or dressing will be applied after the treatment is complete. Post-operative care instructions will be given before you leave, and it’s very important you follow these directions carefully.

Candidates for laser skin resurfacing

If you’re interested in laser skin resurfacing in the Thousand Oaks and Westlake Village area, you may be a great candidate for the procedure. The best candidate for skin resurfacing is determined by skin type, which correlates with your ability to tan or burn in the sun. A person with a lighter skin type more easily burns in the sun, but is more likely to receive excellent results with skin resurfacing, with fewer complications. A thorough medical history is vital to determine candidacy. It is important that you provide any previous history of poor scarring or keloid formation, prior use of oral tretinoin (Accutane) for acne treatments, any previous resurfacing treatments or surgeries, and any history of lip or mouth sores. During the consultation, Dr. Tansavatdi will determine what level of treatment you need based on your goals, your skin type and color, thickness of skin in certain areas of the face, and your likelihood of poor healing or scarring.

Recovering from skin resurfacing

Recovery time from laser skin resurfacing will depend on the depth of your treatment. You can expect redness to last anywhere from a few weeks to three months. As for pain, it is usually quite limited if the after-care instructions are followed.

There may be initial pain on the first day when washing your face, as well as during the following week. Blisters may appear on your face, and these should be left alone to open and peel away on their own.

Facial swelling and bruising at the injection sites are common, and disappears within a few days.

New skin will appear within 5 to 10 days. You can return to work after this new skin has appeared. To prevent problems with irregular pigmentation, it’s important that you strictly avoid any sun exposure in the first three months. Dr. Tansavatdi and her team will closely monitor your progress and guide you to help achieve the best results.
