How does Juvederm Voluma XC work?

As we age, the hyaluronic acid in our body decreases, causing skin volume to decrease and wrinkles to occur. Juvederm Voluma XC is a gel that contains hyaluronic acid, which is a natural polysaccharide (sugar molecule) that occurs in the body. As we age, the hyaluron in our body—which provides strength and hydration—decreases, which means that skin volume decreases and wrinkles occur. When Juvederm Voluma XC is injected into the mid-face, the hyaluronic acid attracts and binds to water molecules.

Since each molecule can hold 1,000 times its weight in water, using Juvederm Voluma XC can create plump, youthful-looking cheeks. Juvederm Voluma XC is gradually degraded by the body’s own mechanisms and disappears without any residue. Juvederm Voluma XC is manufactured using a unique Hylacross technology that cross-links molecules and creates a smooth, malleable gel. The formulation of Juvederm Voluma XC means that it contains larger molecules of hyaluronic acid that are excellent for adding fullness to the cheeks.

Who is a good candidate for Juvederm Voluma XC?

Patients must be in good health, have reasonable expectations for the procedure, and be over 21 years of age. Juvederm Voluma XC cannot be used if you have a bleeding disorder, are pregnant, or are breastfeeding. If you have a skin infection (such as a cold sore, pimple, or rash), you must wait until it is healed. Let Dr. Tansavatdi know if you are allergic to gram-positive bacterial proteins or to lidocaine. To prevent bruising, you must avoid taking medications and supplements that prolong bleeding during the week before your procedure.

How is Juvederm Voluma XC administered?

Juvederm Voluma XC is administered using a fine needle. Juvederm Voluma XC contains lidocaine to numb the area and make the injections more comfortable. It’s very important to use a health care provider with the training and experience to inject fillers in a way that flatters your face and does not look overdone.

Can Juvederm Voluma XC be combined with other treatments?

Absolutely. During your consultation, Dr. Tansavatdi will discuss your aesthetic goals and how to best achieve the look you desire. Many of our Westlake Village facial plastic surgery patients choose to combine Juvederm Voluma XC with other procedures to create a more youthful, rested appearance.
