Chin Augmentation Surgery Performed by Dr. Kristina Tansavatdi

Chin augmentation surgery strengthens a weak chin to restore balance to the face and improve its overall structure. Chin augmentation is performed with soft, synthetic chin implants which can also be used for reconstructive purposes for those who have sustained traumatic injuries to the face. Dr. Tansavatdi is a highly qualified facial plastic surgeon in Westlake Village and Thousand Oaks area with extensive experience performing cosmetic or reconstructive chin augmentation surgery.

What can chin augmentation accomplish?

A receding chin is usually a physical trait that an individual is born with, although the chin may also become weak due to the bone shrinking with age, or because of a traumatic injury. Chin augmentation surgery increases the prominence of a weak or receding chin, thereby improving facial harmony to help patients feel better about their appearance. The overall result is raised confidence and quality of life.

Who is a good chin augmentation surgery candidate?

In order to evaluate your candidacy for chin augmentation surgery, Dr. Tansavatdi will have a consultation with you where she will carefully review your medical history and aesthetic goals. A dental exam and X-rays of your chin may be taken to help Dr. Tansavatdi evaluate teeth alignment, underlying facial structures, and soft tissue. She also examines skin elasticity to determine the best implant size. Chin augmentation candidates must be in good general health and have realistic expectations of the surgery and its outcome.

How is chin augmentation surgery performed?

Chin augmentation surgery is performed on an outpatient basis under local or mild anesthesia. The procedure typically lasts about one hour. To insert the chin implant, Dr. Tansavatdi will create incisions on either the inside of the mouth, or just under the chin. Chin implants come in various shapes and sizes, and are made of silicone. After creating the incisions, Dr. Tansavatdi creates a pocket where the chin implant is placed and secured. Incisions are then closed, and the area is covered with bandages.

Recovery from chin augmentation surgery

During the 3 to 5 days following chin augmentation surgery, patients may experience mild numbness, soreness, or draining. The chin may also be swollen, but these side effects should subside within a week.

You can usually shower and/or wash your face within 48 hours after your surgery, but be very careful when doing so. Brushing your teeth is fine to do immediately, as long as you are very mindful around the incisions. During recovery, it’s best to limit excessive facial movements for 1 to 2 weeks, and it’s also important to avoid putting pressure on your chin for six weeks. Patients are able to return to work and other activities within 5 to 7 days. Physical exercise and other strenuous activities may be restricted for up to three weeks or longer.

More detailed post-operative instructions will be provided to each patient, and the recovery process will be carefully monitored by Dr. Tansavatdi and her staff to ensure the best healing period and results. If you have any questions or concerns about the recovery process, please feel free to ask us.
