Restylane® Refyne treatments take less than 30 minutes, and the results last up to one year. Dr. Kristina Tansavatdi’s Thousand Oaks patients look younger and more rested, without the downtime of plastic surgery or the “overly injected” look associated with older generation dermal fillers.

Restylane Refyne: natural-looking enhancement

Restylane Refyne is a new addition to injectable gels that was created specifically to smooth fine lines around your nose and mouth. This area has traditionally been difficult to treat because of constant movements from smiling, chewing, talking, and other facial expressions. The gel in Restylane Refine creates a youthful, natural look by moving organically as you speak and returning to a natural shape when your face is at rest.

How does Restylane Refyne work?

As you age, the hyaluron in your body (which provides strength and hydration) decreases in your skin. The resulting lack of structure enables fine lines to form around your nose and mouth. Restylane Refyne contains hyaluronic acid, which is a natural polysaccharide, or sugar molecule, that occurs in your body. When Restylane Refyne is skillfully injected into the fine lines around your nose and mouth, the hyaluronic acid smooths wrinkles by restoring strength and hydration to your skin.

Hyaluronic acid works by attracting and binding to water molecules. Since each molecule can hold 1,000 times its weight in water, the molecules in Restylane Refyne plump wrinkles and create more youthful-looking skin. Hyaluronic acid is gradually degraded by the body’s own mechanism and disappears without any residue. The results of Restylane Refyne will last about one year.

What makes Restylane Refyne different from other fillers?

The cross-linkage structure of hyaluronic acid comes in many different thicknesses and strengths. The cross-links in Restylane Refyne use XpresHAn Technology™, which creates a soft, supportive aesthetic filler. This specific formulation makes Restylane Refyne ideal for superficial wrinkles in facial areas that have a lot of movement (such as around your nose and mouth). Other formulations are better suited for deeper wrinkles or for other areas of your face.

Dr. Tansavatdi is an expert at choosing the best type(s) of filler to achieve the look you want. She may recommend using Restylane Refyne in conjunction with other dermal fillers for deeper wrinkles or to rejuvenate other areas of your face.

How is Restylane Refyne applied?

Dr. Tansavatdi begins by cleansing the skin and applying numbing cream. She may also use a local anesthetic to provide additional comfort. Using an extremely fine needle, she will then carefully inject Restylane Refyne into the fine lines around your nose and mouth. Discomfort during the treatment is very minimal.

After injecting the filler, Dr. Tansavatdi gently massages your face to make sure that the Restylane Refyne molecules are evenly distributed. The procedure takes less than 30 minutes and is performed at our Thousand Oaks office. The goal of Restylane Refyne is to subtly reduce wrinkles around the nose and mouth so that you look natural when you smile, frown, or pucker your lips.

Restylane Refyne recovery and results

The most common side effects from Restylane Refyne include bruising, swelling, redness, or itchiness at the injection site. These side effects are generally minimal, and can be treated with ice packs. To minimize side effects, you should avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting (anything that forces blood into your face), and heat exposure for 24 hours following your Restylane Refyne treatment. Side effects normally resolve after 24 hours, and the majority of our Thousand Oaks patients experience very little discomfort.

Rare side effects include scarring and infection, although these can be avoided by providing Dr. Tansavatdi with a thorough medical history before your treatment. Adhering to her post-op care instructions will also help you avoid these side effects. Results from Restylane Refyne can last up to a year; however, maintenance injections may be recommended for optimal results.

Is Restylane Refyne safe?

Restylane Refyne has been approved in Europe since 2010, and is very safe when performed by an experienced plastic surgeon such as Dr. Tansavatdi. As a plastic surgeon, Dr. Tansavatdi has the knowledge and experience needed to choose the exact formulation, depth, and location of fillers needed to achieve optimal results.

Restylane Refyne is not recommended if you have an allergy to lidocaine or the gram-positive proteins that are used to form hyaluronic acid. You must tell Dr. Tansavatdi if you are breastfeeding, pregnant, have been diagnosed with a bleeding disorder, or are prone to scarring. Treatment will need to be postponed if you have any sores, pimples, or infections on your skin that could delay healing.
