How do chemical peels work?

Our Westlake Village Chemical peels are a topical treatment and form of exfoliation. This treatment takes advantage of the natural, biological process that is already working within your body. There are different levels of chemical peels (superficial, medium to medium-deep, and deep) to achieve different outcomes.

Their treatment times and recoveries are different, but their similarity is that they each work by applying a mild acid solution to the skin (usually fruit acids and tartaric acid) which removes the damaged top layer to reveal bright, healthy new skin.

Why get a chemical peel?

Everyone’s skin is affected by the everyday elements of pollution, aging, stress, and hormones. Add in other things such as smoking, alcohol, and poor diet, and some of us end up with very damaged skin. And these are just a few things that can cause problems. Many individuals choose to undergo a chemical peel to improve these areas of concern. Chemical peel treatments remove several layers of skin build-up and congestion, which reveals fresh, healthy new skin and also allows skin care products to penetrate deeper and work more effectively.

What to expect

Some peels require no downtime, but for deeper treatments, the peeling process can last anywhere from 3 to five 5 after. During the peeling process, sunscreen should be applied around every three hours to prevent hyperpigmentation. A gentle cleanser and a hydrating gel with hyaluronic acid can also be used.

If your skin becomes too hot during recovery, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation can occur. Because of this, patients should avoid baths, hot tubs, saunas, hot showers, and hot water in general, as well as sun exposure. Avoid these for as long as Dr. Tansavatdi advises.

Chemical peel treatments

Chemical peels can take up to 30 minutes. When you arrive for your chemical peel, we will prepare your skin by cleansing it to remove any oil and debris so that the chemicals can fully penetrate your skin. Gel will then be applied to some areas of your face, and the chemicals will be administered in layers. Between these layers, we will also administer gels and creams to activate the chemicals, strengthen the skin, and saturate the skin to keep you comfortable.

During the treatment, depending on the level of deepness, patients may feel burning or tingling sensations and their skin will become pink. This means the chemical peel is working. The acid is doing its job, helping to make new collagen and creating brand-new, healthy skin.  Dr. Tansavatdi will be checking in with you during the treatment to make sure you’re feeling good. She will always make sure to keep your comfort in mind. For optimal, long-term results, Dr. Tansavatdi recommends a series of three chemical peels scheduled 4 to 6 weeks apart.

Am I a candidate for a chemical peel?

If you’re interested in a chemical peel in Westlake Village, you’re probably a great candidate. Essentially anyone who wants to improve their skin is a good candidate for a chemical peel; however, the level of depth will need to be determined by Dr. Tansavatdi based on your skin type, its current condition, and your desired outcome. For example, those who have sensitive skin or broken capillaries should not get deep peels. There is no “best” chemical peel overall—there is only a best chemical peel for you.
