What is Botox and how does it work?

Think about how many times, just today, you’ve chewed, smiled, frowned or squinted in concentration. Every time you use the muscles in your face to express yourself, those muscles contract. As you age, the muscles begin to remain contracted, which is what holds the wrinkle lines in place on your skin.

Botox gets its name from the purified protein botulinum toxin. This substance is FDA-approved to treat wrinkles and lines in the face by blocking the messages from your nerves to specific muscles in your face.

The muscles in your face are the reason you have wrinkles to begin with. After years and years of contracting as you were smiling, frowning, squinting and making other facial expressions, the muscles began to stay contracted. This caused the wrinkles to appear on your skin.

Botox is injected into these muscles, and it stops the message from your nerves that tells the muscles to contract. The muscles relax and stay relaxed, and the wrinkles disappear. Thanks to the effective impact of Botox, your face looks smooth and wrinkle free again.

What can I expect during a Botox treatment?

Botox treatments are quick and painless, which are two excellent benefits of Botox.

Before your treatment, you will have a consultation. Your skin will be examined, and you will have a chance to discuss your goals for your facial appearance.

During your Botox treatment, you will receive an injection into the muscles causing the wrinkles. The injections aren’t painful, but can be a bit uncomfortable for some. The Botox will immediately begin to affect the contracted muscles and cause them to relax. The other muscles will be left alone, which allows natural motion and expression in your face.

It takes about ten minutes or less to complete the treatment.  You may see a little redness and sensitivity in the area of the injection in the day or two after the procedure, which will fade after a couple of days.

How long do Botox results last?

You will be able to enjoy the results of your Botox treatment for about 3-4 months. Those who are getting Botox for the first time might need a few days for the full effects of the treatment to kick in. Your face will be smoother and free of wrinkles, giving you the youthful look you want to see again.

How long is the recovery time after a Botox treatment?

There is no downtime and no recovery time for Botox. You can walk in, receive your treatment, and walk out 20 minutes later as a smoother, younger-looking you.

Don’t massage the areas that were treated, drink alcohol or exercise during the first 24 hours after a Botox treatment.

Some patients may see small red bumps just after their treatment, but they are not something to be concerned about, as they will disappear in about 30 minutes.
