What is Botox?

Botox is an FDA-approved injectable medication made from a safe, low dose of a purified protein called botulinum toxin. This substance is designed to be injected into contracted muscles that are causing the lines and wrinkles in the face. Once injected, it temporarily relaxes the muscles in the targeted area of the face, instantly erasing crease lines and wrinkles.

What does Botox do?

Lines in the face are caused by repetitive muscle movements, such as smiling, chewing, squinting or frowning. These movements are made over and over again, every day of our lives. As the muscles are used in this way over time, they begin to get “stuck” in the contracted positions that our facial movements require. As a person ages, the muscles remain contracted, and this is what causes the lines to be visible, even with the skin at rest.

When Botox is injected, it forces the contracted muscles to relax, getting to the underlying cause of the appearance of wrinkles and lines that age the face. The Botox treatment leaves the skin smooth and free of lines, and wrinkles.

What can I expect during a Botox treatment?

After a consultation to understand your goals and review your skin condition, an injection or injections are done to target the area or areas you want to smooth. By carefully choosing specific muscles, your injector weakens only the wrinkle-producing muscles, preserving your natural facial expressions.

Injections take only a few minutes and are done using an ultrathin needle. There may be some mild discomfort from the needle, but most patients report little or no pain.

How long do Botox results last?

The first time Botox is injected, it will take some time to take full effect. It may take two days to a little over a week until you see the difference. By two weeks after your appointment, you will be able to see the full effects of your Botox treatment. The effects last an average of three to four months.

How long is the recovery time after a Botox treatment?

You may notice small red bumps just after your treatment. These will disappear in about thirty minutes. Any bruising that might occur would be very minimal and would resolve after 1-2 days.

We recommend waiting 24 hours after your treatment to exercise, drink alcohol, or massage or manipulate the areas that were treated. This can help ensure the fastest recovery time.
