What is Botox and how does it work?

Think about how many times, just today, you’ve chewed, smiled, frowned or squinted in concentration. Every time you use the muscles in your face to express yourself, those muscles contract. As you age, the muscles begin to remain contracted, which is what holds the wrinkle lines in place on your skin.

Botox is made from botulinum toxin, which is a purified protein that effectively blocks signals from the nerves to the muscles. Botox is used to treat fine lines, wrinkles and grooves on your face. Contracted muscles, the culprit that causes your wrinkles, have been used in the same way so many times that they remain in that position and can no longer fully relax. Enter the FDA-approved solution: Botox.

When Botox is injected into the targeted muscle, the signal from the nerves to that muscle is blocked, and the injected muscle can't contract. This causes the wrinkles to relax and soften. You walk into your Botox treatment with wrinkles and walk out 20 minutes later with a Botox treatment instantly working to smooth those wrinkles away.

What can I expect during a Botox treatment?

The first step is a consultation to have your skin condition examined and to discuss your aesthetic goals for your face.

Once it is time to move forward with the Botox treatment, an injection is given directly into the targeted muscles. Your injector will choose only the muscles that are contracted and causing wrinkles, leaving the others free to move and allow natural expression in your face.

You can expect little to no pain, although there may be mild discomfort from the needle. The entire treatment takes about ten minutes.

How long do Botox results last?

Botox lasts about 3-4 months. If this is your first time getting Botox, it might take a few days for the difference to show. Once it does, you will notice a lack of wrinkles and lines, and you’ll be able to fully enjoy your smoother, more youthful-looking face.

How long is the recovery time after a Botox treatment?

One of the many benefits of Botox is that there is no recovery or downtime required after Botox treatments.

For the first 24 hours, don’t massage the areas that were treated, as this can spread the Botox. We also recommend waiting 24 hours until you exercise or drink alcohol. Immediately after your treatment, you might see small red bumps. These will disappear in about half an hour.
