Facial fat transfer, also called fat grafting, is a surgical procedure wherein Dr. Tansavatdi removes excess fat cells from one area of your body, carefully purifies them, and then injects them into the areas of the face that have lost volume. The transferred fat helps contour and shape the face youthfully and attractively.

What Happens During A Facial Fat Transfer?

After local anesthesia is applied to ensure your comfort, the first step of a facial fat transfer is liposuction to remove fat from a predetermined area, such as the outer thighs, buttocks, stomach, abdomen, or hips. The liposuction is done very gently and carefully so that the fat cells are not damaged.

The fat is then purified and separated from any other liquids or impurities that were extracted during the liposuction procedure. As a part of this process, the damaged fat cells are also removed to ensure that only the healthy, purified cells are used for the fat transfer.

The purified cells are injected into the areas of the face at the proper depths to provide adequate volume to fill in sunken or hollow areas. This achieves more fullness in the cheeks and contours the lines of the face and jaw to help restore a renewed, youthful appearance.

Who Is A Candidate For Facial Fat Transfer?

Facial fat transfer is for men or women who would like to achieve facial rejuvenation to accomplish the following:

  • Reduce creases between the eyebrows
  • Smooth lines in the forehead
  • Fill hollows under the eyes
  • Contour the area around the nose, temples, and jawline.

Ideal candidates meet the following requirements:

  • Are generally in good health
  • Do not smoke
  • Have enough excess fat to harvest for fat transfer

How Long Will My Results Last?

Once your final results appear, you will have a smoother, contoured, more youthful-looking face, taking years off of your appearance.

Facial fat transfers are long-lasting, providing a more full, youthful appearance for years. However, keep in mind that facial fat transfers do not protect against future aging. Over time, as the natural aging process continues, the results of a fat transfer may diminish slightly.

What Recovery Time Should I Expect After A Facial Fat Transfer?

Recovery after a fat transfer varies from patient to patient. Plan to take one or two weeks off from work or other activities as you recuperate and heal.

Expect swelling and possible bruising in both the area where the fat was removed and the facial areas where the fat was transferred to. The most significant swelling will begin to subside after several days.

After about two weeks, most of the remaining swelling will have subsided. However, there will be a period of settling time while the fat cells readjust and shift as they move into their final position. Some portion of the injected fat will also dissolve in the first few weeks after the procedure. This is a natural part of the healing process and is compensated for during the fat transfer procedure. The final results of the fat transfer may take 4-6 months.
