Why Wrinkles Form
When you look in a mirror and see the lines that have appeared on your face over the years, you may not realize that you’re looking at two different kinds of wrinkles. Each one has a different cause and requires a different treatment to yield optimal anti-aging results.
Dynamic wrinkles occur as a result of repetitive muscle movements. There are dozens of muscles in your face that work in harmony so you can chew, speak and express the complete range of human emotions. These muscles contract when you smile, squint, laugh, frown or furrow your brow. Sometimes, the skin above contracting muscles moves too, creating the lines we call dynamic wrinkles. Dynamic wrinkles disappear when you stop making the expression and your muscles relax. Over time, as you continue to make the same expressions for months and years and decades, the lines can become deeply ingrained.
Static wrinkles are visible when your face is at rest. This can occur when a dynamic wrinkle becomes a permanent fixture of your face or when a crease that is not related to muscle movement forms. As your skin ages, its internal structural system of collagen and elastin breaks down. The tissues lose elasticity and start to sink, a process that can be worsened by sun damage, a poor diet, smoking, an inadequate skincare regimen and other lifestyle or environmental factors. Whether your muscles are moving or your face is in a neutral expression, static wrinkles are present.
Dr. Tansavatdi performs injectable treatments that address both types of wrinkles. In general, dynamic wrinkles respond best to treatment with Botox® and other wrinkle-relaxing injectables, while static wrinkles are more effectively treated with dermal fillers.
Botox® is made of a neurotoxin, botulinum toxin type A, that is derived from bacteria and purified. It is used to temporarily paralyze wrinkle-causing facial muscles, thereby slowing the aging process and diminishing existing telltale signs of aging. Normally, when you make an expression, your nerves send out a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine that binds to receptors in your muscles and prompts them to contract. Botox® works by inhibiting the transmission of acetylcholine from the nerves to the muscles, thereby blocking the signal and causing the muscles to relax. As a result, your expressions soften and the dynamic wrinkles on the surface of your skin become less visible.
In addition to its cosmetic benefits, Botox® also has medical applications. Botox® injections are used to treat excessive perspiration (hyperhidrosis), chronic migraine headaches, pain caused by TMJ syndrome, muscle spasticity, eyelid spasms, an overactive bladder, cervical dystonia and a range of other conditions that affect how the body functions. Most Botox® procedures are cosmetic in nature and are therefore not covered by health insurance. However, if the treatment is prescribed by a doctor to address a medical issue, the costs may be covered.
What Can Botox® Injections Accomplish?
Botox® is one of the most popular nonsurgical cosmetic procedures worldwide. Depending on your needs, Dr. Tansavatdi can use Botox® to:

- Vertical furrows between the eyebrows (glabellar lines or “eleven lines”)
- Crow’s feet
- Bunny lines along the nose

- Lift the corners of the mouth
- Lift the eyebrows
- Reduce dimpling of the chin

There are many more treatments available that can reverse the signs of aging than there were twenty years ago. Botox® is a great option for individuals who are looking for a facial rejuvenation procedure that does not involve surgery. Botox® treatments are economical, involve minimal discomfort, require little to no downtime and provide almost immediate results. All About Injectables
The popularity of cosmetic injectables has skyrocketed in recent years thanks to their many benefits. Within the broad category of injectables, there are several different types of products that address different concerns in different ways. Your optimal treatment plan may involve Botox® alone or may include a combination of injectables that offer comprehensive anti-aging benefits.
Botox® is the most widely known and used wrinkle-relaxing injectable. Others in this category include Dysport, Xeomin and Jeuveau. Each of these products temporarily paralyzes facial muscles by blocking signals from being delivered between the nerves and the muscles. While they are generally similar, there are key differences between the brands. The primary distinction lies in their formulation, which influences how much of the product is needed, how much the product spreads after it is injected, how quickly patients see results and how long their results last.
Dermal fillers minimize static wrinkles and restore facial volume that naturally diminishes with age. Unlike Botox®, dermal fillers do not affect the muscles that cause wrinkles. Instead, they work by “filling in” or “pushing out” wrinkles to smooth the skin. There are many FDA-approved dermal fillers available — including Juvederm, Restylane, Radiesse, Belotero and Sculptra — that vary in cost, composition, thickness, function and longevity. Some types can be reversed with the injection of a specific enzyme, while other fillers can only be absorbed by the body and dissolve over time.
A third type of injectable is designed to improve the appearance of a double chin. Called Kybella, this injectable contains a patented formulation of deoxycholic acid, a molecule found in the body that plays a role in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. Kybella injections essentially “trick” the body into destroying fat cells so they can no longer accumulate or store fat. The result is an improved profile with a more defined chin and a slimmer, more graceful neck.
Injectables are a nonsurgical, minimally-invasive and natural-looking method of rejuvenating the face and improving signs of aging. In some cases, Dr. Tansavatdi recommends a combination of brands or types of injectables to achieve the best results.
Am I A Candidate For Botox®?
Most individuals over the age of 18 who want to reduce the presence of dynamic wrinkles are candidates for Botox® injections. In order to confirm your candidacy, Dr. Tansavatdi will carefully examine your areas of concern and review your medical history. The number of units and treatment areas are individualized to each patient after a discussion of their goals and an assessment of their anatomy, facial tone and muscle strength.
You may not be a candidate for Botox® if:
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding
- You have a neurological condition
- You are allergic to ingredients in the product
- You have an active skin infection or other condition in the area to be treated
Botox® delivers optimal wrinkle-diminishing results and is an excellent nonsurgical facial rejuvenation treatment option for men and women seeking subtle, yet effective anti-aging procedures. Dr. Tansavatdi is highly skilled in administering facial injectables and has an excellent track record of patient safety and satisfactory results. If she determines that you are not a good candidate for Botox® at this time, she can work with you to create an anti-aging plan made up of more suitable treatments.

Preparing for Botox® Injections
The first step of your Botox® treatment is a consultation. Dr. Tansavatdi and our expert injectors have in-depth knowledge of facial anatomy and aesthetics. Before any Botox® treatment, they study each patient’s face closely to identify the ideal injection locations and the amount of product needed to achieve the patient’s goals. Every Botox® treatment is personalized to maximize facial harmony and achieve the best possible cosmetic result. Our goal is to achieve a naturally refreshed look with no visible sign of having had treatment. This initial evaluation can usually take place on the same day as the injections.
Botox® Procedure Details
Botox® is administered at Dr. Tansavatdi’s Westlake Village plastic surgery practice and requires only a 10- to 15-minute office visit. To begin your appointment, your injector will clean your face and mark the treatment area to ensure the injections are safely and accurately placed. They will then administer the injections using an ultra-fine needle that minimizes discomfort felt during the procedure. Though individual tolerance varies, most patients experience little or no pain during the injections and do not require anesthesia.
Patients are able to return to their usual activities right away after receiving Botox® injections. There is no standard downtime or recovery period. Strenuous activities and exercise are discouraged for the rest of the day for best results. Patients should also avoid lying flat for at least four hours after treatment. Subtle swelling or bruising at the injection sites is common and subsides quickly over the next 24 to 48 hours. Other less common side effects include temporary facial weakness or drooping, dizziness and headaches. Your injector will describe all potential side effects in detail before your treatment and provide you with aftercare instructions to minimize risks as much as possible.
Life After Botox
Your results will not appear right away. Botox® takes two to seven days to take effect, after which you will be able to enjoy your results for three to six months. A treatment with Botox® can take five to 10 years off your face — your wrinkles will be less apparent and your overall appearance will be refreshed and youthful, and you will still be able to make natural, unique facial expressions.
As the product wears off, muscle movement gradually returns and treated wrinkles may reappear. Botox® cannot permanently eliminate wrinkles. Regular touch-up treatments are required to maintain your results. Some patients find that their results last longer and they can space their treatments farther apart with repeated injections. Your injector will recommend a customized treatment schedule based on your results.
Enhancing the Results of Your Botox® Treatment
Dr. Tansavatdi often uses Botox® as part of a larger anti-aging plan. Botox® is regularly combined with other injectables to help patients look younger and more refreshed without surgery. Many other nonsurgical facial rejuvenation treatments also pair well with Botox®. For more dramatic transformation, Botox® can be combined with surgical procedures that address signs of aging, such as a facelift, brow lift or eyelid lift. Dr. Tansavatdi can tailor a selection of procedures to your specific aging concerns so they deliver optimal treatment and results.
